Expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads win on price, weight, and structured shapes, and they dominate kids’ rooms. Each advantage follows from how the material handles compression.

How does shredded memory foam actually behave?

Shredded memory foam is viscoelastic polyurethane cut into irregular chunks. It compresses under weight and body heat, then re-expands over a few seconds once you stand. You get deep, even support and years of service; you pay in pounds, a higher sticker price, and a brief new-foam smell.

Viscoelastic means the foam resists quick loads and yields to sustained ones. Flop down and it catches you; settle in and it molds. Stand up and the dent refills itself. EPS cannot do that, and the difference compounds across years of sitting.

Foam ages by losing loft as cell walls fatigue, and it rarely dies outright: a bag of fresh shreds through the liner port restores most of the original height. How do EPS beads actually behave?

EPS beads are pinhead-to-pea-sized spheres of expanded polystyrene, which is mostly trapped air. Beads shift around you the instant you sit, so bead bags feel floaty and molded shapes hold their lines. But crushed beads stay crushed: every bead bag flattens with use and needs topping up.

By the industry’s own description, EPS is 98% air and 2% plastic [2]. Styrene gets polymerized into polystyrene, then steam puffs the granules into closed-cell beads. Bean bag brands buy them small and virgin: Big Joe brands its beads “Megahh,” and Fatboy says one Original holds more than 3 million pearls (manufacturer claims). All that air makes bead chairs easy to live with. Yogibo lists its 6-foot Max at 19 pounds, and Moon Pod lists its 4-foot pod near 12 pounds (manufacturer specs, June 2026).

Air is also the failure mode. Each sit collapses a fraction of those closed cells, and a collapsed bead has no memory. The chair thins, the dent stops springing back, and owners in daily use report wanting fresh beads every 6 to 12 months (editorial estimate from owner-review synthesis). Refill ports and 100-liter bead bags exist because of that arithmetic.

What beads buy you is instant, low-resistance conformity: the fill flows around your body rather than pushing back. Conforming seats measure well in the one controlled bean bag experiment on record, a 2022 PeerJ crossover study (n=14) that recorded lower trapezius (neck) muscle activity during bean bag naps than in a matched urethane-foam chair [3]. The bead safety record is mechanical rather than chemical. Do bean bag fills off-gas VOCs?

Both fills can smell when new, and neither has documented health harm at household exposure levels. The styrene findings behind polystyrene’s scary headlines come from occupational settings, and certified polyurethane foam must pass a strict emissions cap. Air out a new foam chair for a few days and move on.

Styrene first, because it sounds worst. The federal ATSDR toxicological profile for styrene documents nervous-system effects mainly at occupational exposure levels: factory air, breathed across shifts [8]. The National Toxicology Program lists styrene as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen,” and a 2014 National Research Council review upheld that listing [9].

Here is the context those headlines drop. The findings concern styrene the monomer; in a finished bead, the styrene sits locked in polymer chains, and the bead is 98% air [2]. We could locate no published study documenting harmful styrene exposure from intact EPS fill in a home. Evidence strength: strong for occupational styrene effects, essentially absent for household risk from finished beads. The documented household danger remains the one above, loose beads in small airways [4].

Polyurethane foam gives off the familiar “new foam smell”: volatile organic compounds that taper over the first days. The CertiPUR-US program caps certified foam at total VOC emissions under 0.5 ppm in chamber testing and requires it be made without formaldehyde, PBDEs, TDCPP, TCEP, mercury, lead, and regulated phthalates [1]. As of June 2026, most major US foam-sack brands advertise certified fill; confirm the certificate applies to the foam itself, since the program certifies foam rather than finished chairs. Unbag a new foam chair in a ventilated room for two to three days. The wait doubles as its re-expansion window.

What about flame retardants? TB 117-2013 and CertiPUR-US, explained

Bean bags sold in the US today generally need no added flame-retardant chemicals. California’s TB 117-2013 smolder standard, the de facto national rule, can be met without them, and since 2020 California bans covered flame retardants above 1,000 parts per million in upholstered furniture and juvenile products.

The backstory explains the worry. California’s 1975 rule, the original TB 117, made upholstery foam survive a 12-second open flame, and manufacturers nationwide complied by treating foam with flame-retardant chemicals [10]. A 2012 study in Environmental Science & Technology measured the result: flame retardants in 85% of 102 US couch foam samples, with TDCPP (chlorinated tris, a suspected carcinogen) the most common additive, found in 41% of samples [11].

TB 117-2013 replaced the open-flame test with a smolder-resistance test, a lit-cigarette protocol, effective January 1, 2014 [10]. Cover fabric and barrier design can pass it alone, so flame-retardant chemicals went from required-in-practice to optional. California then closed the loop: under AB 2998, new upholstered furniture and juvenile products containing covered flame retardants above 1,000 parts per million cannot be sold in the state as of January 1, 2020 [12].

Two checks for shoppers. Read the law label for “complies with TB 117-2013” plus a statement that no flame retardant chemicals were added. For foam fill, ask for CertiPUR-US, which excludes the legacy retardants by name [1]. One scope note: the 2012 sampling and the certification program both target polyurethane foam, so this is chiefly a foam-side question, and the bead-side concerns remain the mechanical ones above.

What does refill cadence cost per year?

Over five years, a 4-to-5-foot bead chair runs about $39 per year and a comparable foam sack about $53, by the worked math below (editorial estimate). Stretch the horizon and the gap closes, because the foam bag keeps serving while the bead bag keeps billing for refills.

Anchor prices first. As of June 2026, Big Joe sells a 100-liter (3.5 cu ft) bag of virgin polystyrene refill beans for $29.99, or two bags for $49.99 [7]. Ultimate Sack sells shredded polyurethane refill foam at $34.99 for 16 pounds or $44.99 for 25 pounds [6]. Generic 10-pound foam refills at big-box marketplaces run roughly $30-$60 (approximate, June 2026).

Beads win the sprint by about $14 a year. Run the same assumptions to year eight and the routes nearly meet, near $36 per year for beads and $38 for foam, except the foam owner has opened two refill bags to the bead owner’s seven (editorial estimate).

Two caveats tilt the long game toward foam. The math assumes a $75 bead shell survives eight years of daily sitting; owner reviews suggest budget zippers and seams often quit earlier (editorial estimate), while foam-sack warranties run 10 years at Ultimate Sack and lifetime on CordaRoy’s foam chairs (manufacturer terms). Household VOC measurements specific to bean bags are missing from the literature too.
