Big Joe Milano vs Fuf XL (2026): Cheap Now or Buy Once?

Big Joe Milano (73/100, $62.99) or Fuf XL (82/100, from $184.99)? Beads need $27.99 refills; Big Joe says the foam needs none. See who wins each round.

Big Joe Milano vs Fuf XL comes down to cheap now or buy once. The Milano (73/100, No. 12 of 12) is a $62.99 bead armchair with a real backrest for a teen, a dorm or a reading corner [1]. The Big Joe Fuf XL (now listed as the Fuf 7 Ft) scores 82/100, No. 6, and suits an adult who sprawls, from $184.99 [2].

The real question is what each chair costs after day one. The Milano’s beads flatten and Big Joe sells the refills; the Fuf’s foam costs about three times as much up front in Standard fabrics (editorial arithmetic) and, Big Joe says, never needs refilling [3]. Scores come from our Comfort Score model; the full write-ups are the Milano review and the Fuf XL review, and both sit on our 12-chair ranking. Big Joe’s page says the 7 Ft was “previously known as” the Fuf XL [2].

Big Joe Milano vs Fuf XL: which one supports you better?

The Fuf XL takes both rounds: ergonomic support 20/25 to the Milano’s 18/25, and fill quality and recovery 17/20 to 13/20.

The Milano’s case is geometry. It has structured back support and a carry handle in a body 28 inches tall [1], which the filed review calls rare at this price; a structureless lounger cannot hold an upright seat the same way. The Fuf is built to sprawl: 35 inches tall, about 62 wide [2], with nothing in its specs for sitting upright.

Fill is where the four-point gap comes from. Big Joe says bean bags flatten over time and that Fufs never need refilling [3]. The second is a maker claim, and our memory foam vs EPS explainer covers why crushed beads stay crushed while foam can be re-lofted by shifting the fill [10]. A Fuf also ships compressed and needs 48 hours (support article) to 72 hours (product page) to expand [10, 2].

Which cover is easier to live with, the Milano’s or the Fuf XL’s?

The Fuf XL takes cover durability 12/15 to 11/15 and ease of care 9/10 to 5/10, a four-point gap that ties fill for the largest on the card.

A Milano cover does not come off. Big Joe’s support article says bean-filled chairs have non-removable, spot-clean covers [3], Walmart’s spec table agreed on September 13 [4], and Big Joe’s warranty article says the cover alone cannot be replaced on bean-filled items other than the Lux Sealander, which have no inner liner [6]. A bad spill is a stain to manage, not a cover to launder. Four of the 10 Standard-fabric Milanos are SmartMax, the fabric the filed review recommends for kids and pets [1].

A Fuf cover unzips. Big Joe says to machine wash it cold on a gentle cycle and air dry it, except vegan leather [5]; its support guide widens the exception to “other select premium covers” [3], and the 7 ft page lists a vegan leather option at the $309.99 Premium tier [2]. Replacement covers start at $51.99 across the line [11], but that is a 4 ft cover; a 7 ft replacement runs $117.99–$229.99 [12], 64% of the bag’s entry price at the low end (editorial arithmetic). For beads with an easier cover, see Yogibo vs Fatboy.

Who fits where: a 4.5 lb armchair or a 57 lb lounger?

The Milano takes size-to-space fit 9/10 to 8/10. Its 30.5 by 28 by 28 inches and 4.5 lb [1] cover about 6 square feet of floor (editorial arithmetic); the Fuf XL covers roughly 22 and is listed for the whole family [2]. Big Joe’s size guide pitches the 7 ft Fuf for maximum stretch-out lounging [13], and the page calls it about 7 diagonal feet, not 7 feet across [2]; our size chart flags the trap.

The sizes in between matter more. The Milano Large (31 by 30 by 33 inches, 6.6 lb) is $169.99 [14], $15 under the Standard Fuf XL (editorial arithmetic), so a bigger adult shopping Milanos is already paying near-foam money. Going down, the Fuf line has a 5 ft from $124.99 and a 4 ft from $84.99, both unscored [11].

Which Big Joe bean bag fits a kid or a teen?

Big Joe lists the standard Milano for teens and young adults [1]. The Milano Kids is the small one: 23 by 18.5 by 19 inches, 2.1 lb, $44.99 [15]. Big Joe’s size guide points kids to its 3 ft and 3.5 ft Fufs, $47.19 and $69.99, and says the 3 ft cover is spot-clean only [11, 13]. For a child under 3, none of these is a free pass: the Milano and Fuf product descriptions we read carry no ASTM F1912-21 statement [1, 2], and that standard is written for bead-filled chairs, not shredded foam [16]. Confirm that any zipper stays shut without a tool, as our toddler safety guide lays out.

Warranty and service: one year each, but not the same promise

Warranty and service is a draw at 7/10 each: both chairs sit under Big Joe’s one-year limited warranty, but the paper covers different things. For beads, going flat or noticeably deflating in the first 60 days may earn a refill solution after claim review, and compression after that is normal, not a defect [6]. For foam-filled seating, Big Joe’s general policy lists foam filling and zippers among the covered items for the year; claims need proof of purchase from an authorized retailer [7]. The policy does not say what failure of the foam would qualify.

Returns differ more. On website orders the Milano gets 30 days from the order date and return shipping falls on you, which Big Joe warns can exceed the product’s price [8]. A 7 Ft Fuf’s page promises home pickup and flat return fees within 30 days of delivery [2]; the support article sets the fee at 10% of the refund ($20 minimum, $150 maximum) for like-new items [9]. The windows start on different dates, so plan on the shorter. The fee is $20 on a $184.99 Fuf and $31.00 on a $309.99 Premium (editorial arithmetic).

Cheap bean bag vs foam bean bag: what does the refill math say?

The Milano takes value 10/10 to the Fuf’s 9/10, and the filed marks reward sticker price. Standard to Standard, the Fuf XL costs $122 more (editorial arithmetic). Beads are the running cost: Big Joe sells a 100-liter refill pack at $27.99, or $46.99 for two, and says most of its chairs take one to two bags [17]. It publishes no refill interval or per-model count; the filed Milano review budgets one pack a year, and our explainer puts daily-use bead chairs at 6 to 12 months (editorial estimate from owner-review synthesis). The Fuf collection lists no foam refill [11].

Cumulative cost, Standard fabricsMilano, a pack a yearMilano, a pack every six monthsFuf XL, no refills
Day one$62.99$62.99$184.99
Year 3$146.96$230.93$184.99
Year 5$202.94$342.89$184.99

All figures are editorial arithmetic from October 1, 2026 maker prices and compare purchase paths, not equal seats: a 2.5 ft chair against a 7 ft lounger. At a pack a year the Milano’s total passes the Fuf’s between years 4 and 5; at a pack every six months, between years 2 and 3. The table omits what could lift the Fuf’s line: a foam top-up (the explainer’s editorial estimate is year 3 to 5; Big Joe lists none) and a replacement 7 ft cover at $117.99–$229.99 [12], which would put the Fuf near $303 (editorial arithmetic). The Milano’s best argument is also missing: a $62.99 chair that serves two dorm years never reaches the crossover. Buying once only pays if you keep it.

The Fuf XL wins four rounds, the Milano two, and one is a draw. Fill and care are worth eight of the nine net points. No filed point changes here.

Is either one a safety risk?

Neither chair has a recall on record. A fresh query of CPSC’s recall database on October 1, 2026 lists no Big Joe, Milano or Fuf bean bag, and its newest bean bag chair recall remains January 2018 [18]. The filed reviews rest on checks from September 13, 2026 (Milano) and June 10, 2026 (Fuf).

Parent company Comfort Research has two resolved recalls, disclosed in both reviews. The first, announced December 19, 2014 as recall 15-053, covered about 125,000 round vinyl bead chairs: children could open the zipper, crawl in and suffocate or choke on beads. No injuries were reported, and the remedy was a repair that permanently disabled the zipper [19]. The second, on January 2, 2018 (recall 18-076), covered about 1,200 Ultra Lounge covers sold without filling, for the same hazard, with a refund as the remedy [20]. Neither involved the Milano or the Fuf. Big Joe says it leaves the outer zipper pull off on purpose for child safety [21]. The recall list tracks every action on record.

Big Joe Milano or Fuf XL: who should buy which?

Buy the Big Joe Milano if:

  • Your ceiling is about $63 and you want a chair shape, not a lounging pad.
  • It is for a teen, a dorm or a reading corner, and it moves between rooms at 4.5 lb.
  • You accept a spot-clean cover and will treat a $27.99 refill pack as part of the price.
  • You want a low-cost trial: 30 days from order and no restocking fee listed, though return shipping is yours [8].

Buy the Big Joe Fuf XL if:

  • An adult will lounge full length and $184.99 or more is workable.
  • You have about 22 square feet of floor and a place to leave a 57 lb bag.
  • Kids or pets make a washable, replaceable cover worth the premium.
  • You accept a one-year warranty and a 10% restocking fee ($20 minimum) on returns.

Skip both if you want a longer warranty on foam. Lovesac alternatives sorts what is buyable; our Ultimate Sack 4000 review covers a longer warranty but scores a removable-cover bag that ultimatesack.com no longer lists, and its only 4 ft bag has a non-removable, spot-clean cover [22]. Big Joe Fuf vs Chill Sack sets the Fuf against the other budget foam sack.

What can a research desk not tell you?

This desk owns no lab and has not handled either chair, so bead crush rate, foam density and seam strength are beyond us; Big Joe publishes no density, refill interval or per-model bead count. The refill math rests on an editorial estimate, and owner reviews lean toward the delighted and the furious and thin out after year five. Walmart’s listing blocked a re-check on October 1, so its price is a September 13 figure; prices are the most perishable part of this page.

The Fuf XL is the better chair and the Milano is the cheaper experiment, and 82 to 73 describes that trade fairly. If you will keep one seat for years, pay once; if you want a $63 backrest and will count refills in the price, the Milano is honest value.

Update log. October 1, 2026: first publication. Checked today: buybigjoe.com prices and stock for every Milano variant, the Fuf 7 Ft and its replacement covers, the refill pack, Big Joe’s warranty, return and care articles, CPSC’s recall database, and the Ultimate Sack 4 ft listing; Walmart blocked a re-check, so its range keeps its September 13, 2026 label. Carried unchanged until the quarterly re-score: the filed 73 and 82, every criterion mark, and ranks No. 12 and No. 6. Queued for it: Fuf XL warranty and service (restocking fee and in-home pickup on 7 ft returns, new to the file) and the 7 ft replacement-cover price, which the filed review gives as the 4 ft figure.

Questions, answered

Big Joe Milano vs Fuf XL: which is better?

The Fuf XL is the better chair on our model, 82/100 to the Milano's 73/100, winning ergonomic support, fill, cover, and ease of care. The Milano wins size and value, and warranty is a draw. Choose the Milano (from $62.99) for a teen, a dorm, or a reading corner. Choose the Fuf XL (from $184.99) if an adult wants to lounge full length and skip refills (maker prices, October 1, 2026).

Is the Big Joe Fuf XL worth three times the price of a Milano?

Only if you will keep it. Standard to Standard, the Fuf XL costs $122 more ($184.99 against $62.99, October 1, 2026). At one $27.99 refill pack a year (editorial estimate) the Milano's total passes the Fuf's between years 4 and 5; at a pack every six months, between years 2 and 3. Big Joe says Fufs never need refilling, a maker claim, and lists foam filling under its one-year warranty.

Which Big Joe bean bag should I buy for a teen or a dorm?

For a teen or a dorm, the standard Milano at $62.99 is the usual pick: Big Joe lists it for teens and young adults, it weighs 4.5 lb, and it has a backrest. The Milano Kids is $44.99 for young children. A 57 lb Fuf XL is a family lounger that needs about 22 square feet of floor (maker pages, October 1, 2026). Before either goes in a child's room, confirm its zipper stays shut without a tool.

Cheap bean bag vs foam bean bag: which costs less over five years?

At October 1, 2026 maker prices, a Standard Milano with one $27.99 refill pack a year costs about $203 over five years, against $184.99 for a Standard Fuf XL with no refills. Refill every six months and the Milano reaches about $343. These are editorial estimates; Big Joe publishes no refill interval, and a foam top-up or a spare Fuf cover would add to the Fuf's total.

Can you wash the cover on a Big Joe Milano or Fuf XL?

Only the Fuf XL. Big Joe's care article says to machine wash a Fuf cover cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and air dry it, except vegan leather, which is spot-clean only. Its support center says bean-filled chairs such as the Milano have non-removable, spot-clean covers. A replacement 7 ft Fuf cover costs $117.99–$229.99 (maker pages, October 1, 2026).
